Outer Harbour Centreboard Club is made up of members with varying degrees of skill from international sailing competitors to unskilled beginners. Whether we have been sailing for many years or we arerecreational day sailors we all enjoy the challenges of recreational dinghy sailing.
For the unskilled or newer sailors, some of the more experienced members have been volunteering to mentor adult members, and you may pick up enjoyable skills fairly quickly.
For those who want expert tuition, OHCC does not directly offer training courses at the present, but may consider doing so if enough members were interested. Formal sailing instruction courses are available at St. Jamestown Sailing Club, Mooredale Sailing,Westwood Sailing Club, and Toronto Sailing and Canoe Club.
OHCC together with TSCC offers a learn-to-sail programs for children older than 7 years to 17 – Each course is 5 full days, Monday to Friday, throughout summer months. The courses are taught by Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) certified instructors. The Club has carefully maintained Optimist dinghies for the courses. Once a child has qualified, they may use the “OPTIs” under parental supervision. .
The Optimist Racing program is designed for youth from 10 to 15 years old who have achieved Optimist Skills III or White Sail III level. The Bronze Sail programs are designed for youth from 10 to 17 years old who have completed their White Sail III level. Students learn advanced sailing skills and an introduction to racing in TSCC’s fleet of 420′s. The Silver Sail VI & Gold Sail VII are eight-week programs designed for youth 15 to 18 years old. Students compete in multiple regattas during the summer. Racing rules and advanced tactics are taught.
OHCC is excited to offer this program to its members as well as the members of its fellow north shore clubs. We believe this is our opportunity to develop the potential of our young sailors. It gives them access to an excellent youth sail program in a “Development Centre” supported by the Ontario Sailing Association.
