Bart’s Bash

By Ron Duffy

Be sure to mark September 20th on your calendar as your must-do event for 2015. On that day, OHCC will be participating in Bart’s Bash, the largest sailing event held across the world. In 2014, 30,734 sailors from clubs in over 60 countries took part in a global sailing regatta, setting a new world record. Canada had 8 clubs participate in that event with none from the Outer Harbour. This year, we aim to change that.

What is Bart’s Bash? It commemorates the tragic passing of Andrew “Bart” Simpson during a training exercise for the 2013 America’s Cup. Previously, he had an impressive record at sailing events, cumulating in Gold for Great Britain at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He was stalwart champion of sailing, and in that spirit, Bart’s Bash was inaugurated to promote sailing across the world and among our youth.

Bart’s Bash will be a great way to cap off your 2015 sailing season. Tap your sailing friends on the shoulder and get them on the water for this event. We have sent invitations to our fellow dinghy clubs in the Outer Harbour, so let’s make this an event to remember!

Race start is at 2 pm and will be followed by a barbeque. Bring your game face, a hearty appetite, and, later, hoist a mug in memory of big Bart.

Note that Bart’s Bash is also a charitable event dedicated towards promoting sailing. Donations are not required, but are appreciated.
